3.10.5 Oil sampling valve. Oil sampling valves shall be provided on the engine, transmission and
hydraulic system. The valves shall be manually operated and shall automatically close when released. It
shall be made of material resistant to corrosion such that it will not contaminate the sample. The discharge
port of the valve shall be covered with a capture chain cap conforming to SAE J514. The valve shall be
located in such a way as to insure that the personnel will not be exposed to danger when taking oil sampler
with the engine running. The location of the oil tap shall be such that when samples are taken, it shall be a
true representation of oil that is flowing while the engine is running. Sampling valves shall be labeled
engine, transmission or hydraulic; whichever is appropriate to indicate the type of oil sampled.
3.10.6 Tachometer drive. A heavy-duty key type tachometer drive shall be provided and shall have a
5/32-inch female connection in accordance with SAE J678. The output drive shall be covered with a
threaded captive chained cap for protection when not in use.
3.10.7 Drive train. A drive train consisting of a torque converted, full powershift transmission, front
drive axle with differential and planetary final drives, and all necessary connecting components shall be
furnished. The transmission shall provide not less than four forward speeds and one reverse speed. A
locking or limited-slip differential shall be furnished in the drive axle.
3.10.8 Wheels and tires. Commercial standard demountable wheels or rims shall be provided.
Traction type tubeless tires shall be furnished and shall have a tread pattern suitable for distributor
operation. The contractor's standard tire size, thread depth and ply rating shall be furnished. The
contractor's standard fenders shall be furnished to restrict mud throwing and splash from the tires. Tires
furnished to the Government shall be not more than 12 months old from date of cure of the rubber to date
of acceptance by the Government.
3.10.9 Steering and braking.
3.10.9.1 Steering system. The distributor shall have an articulated frame type steering system. The
steering system shall provide full control of the distributor under all normal operating conditions and shall
provide emergency steering conforming to SAE J53 that will give the operator steering control in the event
of engine failure.
3.10.9.2 Braking system. The distributor shall be equipped with power assisted brakes on all four
wheels. A parking system and an emergency braking system shall be provided. The braking system shall
comply with SAE J1152. When nonpetroleum based brake fluid is used in a hydraulic braking system, it
shall use silicone type brake fluid in accordance with MIL-B-46176. Asbestos material shall not be used in
the brake linings or shoes for this vehicle.
3.10.10 Operator's compartment.
3.10.10.1 Seat. The seat shall be located to provide the operator with convenient access to operating
controls, and visibility of the work zone and all instruments and gauges mounted in the operator's
compartment when seated with seat belt fastened and properly adjusted.
